ASSESSING CHURCH - WHAT TO LOOK FOR

LOOKING FOR HELP FROM THE WRONG SOURCE
I don’t mean to rag on any individual or group desiring to help congregations but … I can’t help myself. I read with dismay the list of services being offered to churches by a consulting team. Like countless other consulting services, this team has developed strategies based upon working with some of America’s most innovative and fastest growing churches, which if applied to other churches, will unfailingly produce the same cutting edge outcomes. That’s the expectation.
That’s what you are paying for. All your church needs to do is to invite this team to conduct a ministry health assessment. You will do an online survey. A clandestine visitor will come to your church for a weekend to experience church, assessing your parking, exterior and indoor signage, demographic services, facilities and decor, greeters/hosts and ushers, how musicians and sermons engage with people and life. Then an executive report will be provided to you as well as a discussion with next steps. I’ve been around long enough to know that all of these areas can use some tender loving care and attention. However, my prolonged exposure to life inside church also informs me that the coaching from which most congregations and leaders would benefit most, pertains less to strategies and more to character, authenticity, spirituality and reliance upon God’s Spirit.

  1. Our church is now benefiting from having a team of godly people from the Fellowship come alongside to do an evaluation of the health of our church. This takes humility and a teachable spirit from our pastors and elders which I greatly respect. We are no implementing the two weak spots and we are benefiting greatly as they continue to help us by sticking around to be accountable an action plan and much prayer is implemented. First church we've been in that has ever had the courage to do this and the benefits are huge if right godly team coming alongside. (PS by the way, we did not leave our other churches, God either closed them down because they were wordly, or took a pastor out like he did with Nebuchadnezzar, if we think that God turns a blind eye to what is happening in our churches, think again. He promises to bless those who obey and relationship with Him for who He says He says or disciplines His children, it's His church). I am encouraged by our church. God bless them.

    1. I appreciate you taking the time to write Dawn-zee. I am pleased to know your experience with consultants is proving to be profitable. I have no dispute with a company that comes with honourable and spiritual motivation and agenda, and with leadership who are prepared to set pride aside in order to become all God's Spirit can empower them to be. Thanks.
